This homemade blue cheese dressing recipe is so much better than store-bought! Creamy, thick, and tangy, it's a delicious dip or salad dressing.

Blue cheese dressing

Meet my go-to blue cheese dressing recipe! Easy to make with 9 simple ingredients, it’s creamy, tangy, and flecked with tender crumbles of blue cheese.

I’ve been getting requests for a blue cheese dressing recipe ever since I shared these buffalo cauliflower wings a few years ago. After testing and tweaking this one with various ratios of mayo, buttermilk, and sour cream, I’m happy to report that it works perfectly as a dip for wings or veggies. With a little more buttermilk (or regular milk) stirred in, it becomes a flavorful, pourable salad dressing too.

I’ve never been a fan of store-bought blue cheese dressings—they’re always a little too funky or salty for my taste. But this homemade version couldn’t be more delicious. It’s bright and complex, with a subtle earthiness from the cheese. I’ve surprised myself with how often I’ve made it lately. I hope you love it too!

How to Make Blue Cheese Dressing

This dressing recipe starts with 9 simple ingredients:

  • Blue cheese, of course! I often make this dressing with pre-crumbled blue cheese, typically just labeled “blue cheese crumbles” in grocery stores. You could also buy a creamy blue cheese like Gorgonzola or Roquefort and crumble it yourself.
  • Sour cream and mayonnaise – They create the dressing’s creamy base. If you don’t have sour cream, feel free to substitute whole milk Greek yogurt.
  • Distilled white vinegar and fresh lemon juice – For tangy flavor. The vinegar adds a sharper kick, while the lemon juice adds a citrusy zing.
  • Dried dill and garlic powder – For savory flavor.
  • Sugar – Its sweetness balances the tangy vinegar and lemon.
  • Buttermilk – To thin the dressing to your desired consistency. Don’t have any on hand? Feel free to substitute regular milk or water—the dressing will be slightly less tangy, but still delicious.
  • And salt and pepper – To make all the flavors pop!

Mixing dressing in glass bowl

To make this dressing, place the blue cheese, mayo, sour cream, vinegar, lemon juice, dill, garlic powder, sugar, and pepper in a small bowl.

Stir to combine, breaking up the cheese as you mix.

Season to taste with salt, then adjust the consistency to your liking, adding buttermilk, milk, or water, if desired, to thin it.

Chill until ready to serve!

Recipe Tip

The final texture is up to you. I don’t list a measurement for the buttermilk so that you have complete control over the dressing’s final texture. Add less (or none) for a thick, creamy dip and more for a drizzleable dressing.

How to Use Blue Cheese Dressing

This dressing is a fantastic dip. Chicken wings + blue cheese dressing are a classic pairing for game day, and I love it with my buffalo cauliflower wings or air fryer buffalo cauliflower for a fun veggie twist. It’s great with crunchy veggies like celery sticks and carrots too.

It’s also a delicious salad dressing. Try it on a traditional wedge salad or any salad with crisp lettuces like romaine or iceberg lettuce.

You can also use it as a sauce for sandwiches, burgers, and tacos. Try it on this veggie burger or these buffalo cauliflower tacos!

How to Store

This homemade blue cheese dressing keeps well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

If the leftovers thicken in the fridge, thin them with a little more buttermilk, milk, or water before using.

I want to try your buffalo wings with blue cheese dressing and I was just wondering if there was a way to make the latter without mayonnaise?

Hi Auni, you could use greek yogurt, then season to taste since mayo is saltier.
